Why tomatoes go in deep and peppers don't. Tomato stems readily grow adventitious roots — roots that form along a buried stem section rather than only from the original root ball — so burying a leggy transplant up to its lowest leaves before planting produces a larger, more resilient root system than planting at pot depth. Peppers and eggplant do not root along a buried stem the same way; burying their stems mainly invites rot at the buried section without the compensating root benefit, which is why they're planted at the same depth they sat in the pot.

Transplanting in the right conditions matters as much as the technique. Transplant on a cloudy day or in late afternoon rather than under midday sun, so the plant has hours of milder conditions to begin recovering before facing full sun stress. Set up support structures now, not later

Install tomato cages, stakes, or trellises before or immediately after planting:

The strongest evidence is for practices that are really about pest and pollinator ecology rather than mysterious plant "friendships": planting flowering herbs and insectary plants (dill, cilantro left to flower, alyssum, calendula) near vegetables draws in predatory and parasitic insects — hoverflies, parasitic wasps, lacewings — that help control aphids and caterpillars. Practical April combinations:

  • Basil under and around tomatoes: shares the bed well by height and canopy shape, and its flowers (once it starts to bolt in summer) draw pollinators and predatory insects

Before spraying anything, ask whether the pest population is actually increasing week over week and whether damage is spreading to new leaves or plants, rather than reacting to the first individual aphid seen. A few aphids on one leaf, still present a week later at the same low level, likely means a predator population is already keeping pace — a population that has visibly exploded across multiple plants in the same week is a different situation and calls for action.

When treatment is warranted, start least-disruptive first: a strong water spray to physically dislodge aphids and mites, then insecticidal soap or horticultural oil (which have to directly contact the pest to work and break down quickly, limiting harm to beneficials that arrive later), reserving broader-spectrum products for infestations that don't respond to those steps.

Watering and support

Watering needs increase rapidly

A tie that was correctly snug in April can girdle and eventually kill the stem above it by July if never rechecked.

Comparing mulch materials

Not all mulch behaves the same way, and April is when the season's mulch choice gets made:
