May brings rapid growth and rising pest pressure. Plants planted in March and April have established root systems and are now competing for water and nutrients. The key to success is consistent attention: regular watering, vigilant scouting, and staying on top of maintenance.
May tasks
Watering becomes critical
By May, plants are large and water demand is high. Soil that was adequate in April becomes dry quickly:
- Check soil moisture daily at 3–4 inches deep. If dry to the touch, water.
- Water early morning (between 6–8 AM) so foliage dries quickly and disease risk is lower
- Water at the base — avoid wetting foliage, which promotes fungal disease
- Water deeply — encourage deep root systems by watering thoroughly, less frequently (soaking once per day beats light daily sprinkling)
- Mulch maintains moisture — if you haven't mulched, do it now; a 2–3 inch layer reduces water needs and keeps weeds down
In dry springs (no rain by mid-May), watering every 1–2 days may be necessary. In rainy springs, less frequent watering suffices.
Maintain and adjust mulch
Mulch settles and decomposes. Check and add more:
- Replenish where needed to maintain 2–3 inch depth
- Pull mulch back from plant stems to prevent rot
- Use mulch as a soil builder — as it decomposes, it improves soil
- Refresh in high-traffic areas where mulch is walked down or spread thin

By May, pest populations are building fast. Weekly scouting with action is essential:

- Sanitize tools between plants with 10% bleach if handling diseased plants
- Discard (don't compost) diseased plant material
Identifying May's most common vegetable-specific pests
Generic categories ("soft-bodied insects," "chewing insects") cover the response, but knowing the specific pest helps you predict what comes next and time your response correctly:
- Squash bugs: Bronze-gray, shield-shaped adults; look on the undersides of squash and pumpkin leaves for clusters of bronze-colored eggs, laid in a neat grid pattern. Crush egg clusters on sight — a single female can lay hundreds of eggs, and catching them at the egg stage is far easier than fighting nymphs later. Adults are hard to kill with contact sprays because of a waxy cuticle; handpicking and egg destruction are the most reliable home-garden controls.
- Colorado potato beetle: Yellow-and-black striped adults and reddish, humpbacked larvae on potato, eggplant, and tomato foliage. Both stages can skeletonize leaves quickly. Handpicking works for small plantings; Bt var. tenebrionis (a different strain than the caterpillar-targeting Bt) controls larvae without harming most beneficials.
- Cucumber beetles (striped or spotted): Small, fast-moving beetles on cucumber, squash, and melon seedlings. Beyond direct feeding damage, striped cucumber beetles vector bacterial wilt, a disease that can kill a cucurbit vine outright — row covers on seedlings until flowering (then removed for pollinator access) are the most effective home-garden defense.
- Tomato hornworm: A large green caterpillar, several inches long when mature, that can strip a tomato plant of foliage in days. Look for dark green or black droppings on leaves below the feeding site — the caterpillar itself is remarkably well camouflaged and easy to miss even when large. Handpick (they don't bite) or treat with Bt if numerous. Leave any hornworm covered in small white cocoons alone — those are parasitic braconid wasp pupae that will kill the hornworm and continue controlling the population.
What to plant in May
Last chance for spring crops
Early May is the last window for cool-season crops before heat accelerates them toward bolting:
- Beets: Last direct seeding early May
- Carrots: Last planting early May
- Lettuce: Plant at high elevation or in shade for heat tolerance
Beyond early May, these crops are not worth planting in most climates.
Main warm-season succession plantings
These go in throughout May (or later if frost risk persists in your area):
- Beans: Plant weekly through mid-June
- Corn: Plant every 10–14 days through mid-June
- Basil: Plant early to mid-May
- Squash, cucumbers, melons: Direct-seed or plant transplants when soil is warm (65°F+)
- Summer herbs: Dill, cilantro, parsley
Heat-tolerant crops for summer success
Late-May plantings for summer harvest:
- Okra: Loves heat; sow when soil is 70°F+
- Sweet potato slips: Plant mid-to-late May
- Lima beans: Plant when soil is warm

If plants appear pale or growth has stalled (and watering is adequate):
- Check for nutrient deficiency: Nitrogen (pale foliage), phosphorus (purple-tinged leaves), or potassium (yellowing leaf margins)
- Use balanced fertilizer: 10-10-10 or 5-5-5 diluted to half strength every 10–14 days
- Or apply compost tea if you prefer organic methods
- Work slowly: Quick, heavy fertilizing can cause excessive leaf growth at the expense of fruit
Side-dressing heavy feeders
Rather than a single dose at planting, heavy-feeding crops benefit from a mid-season boost once they're established and growing vigorously — a technique called side-dressing. Sprinkle a nitrogen-rich fertilizer or a half-inch layer of finished compost in a ring 4–6 inches out from the stem (close enough for roots to reach it, far enough to avoid burning the stem), then water it in. Corn, squash, and tomatoes just setting their first fruit typically respond well to a May side-dressing. Resist the urge to over-apply nitrogen on tomatoes specifically — excess nitrogen produces lush foliage at the direct expense of flowering and fruit set, a common cause of a huge, healthy-looking tomato plant that sets little fruit.
Harvest immature crops to encourage production
Harvest lettuce, spinach, and other greens before they mature. Harvesting prevents bolting and encourages continued production. Pinching off basil flowers encourages bushier plants.
Monitor for nutrient deficiency
- Nitrogen (N): Pale, yellowing lower leaves; stunted growth → apply nitrogen-rich fertilizer or compost
- Phosphorus (P): Purple-tinged leaves; poor root development → less common in home gardens
- Potassium (K): Yellowing leaf margins; weak stems → apply balanced fertilizer
Deadhead flowers on herbs
Pinch off flowers on basil, oregano, marjoram, and other herbs before they go to seed. This keeps plants bushy and productive longer. Once they flower heavily, growth often slows.
Supporting pollinators as flowering begins
May is when squash, cucumbers, melons, and early beans begin flowering, and fruit set from here forward depends on pollinators actually visiting those flowers. A few practices this month protect the pollination that determines your summer harvest.
Timing sprays matters as much as choosing them. Even products considered relatively pollinator-safe, like insecticidal soap or Bt, should be applied in the evening after bees have stopped foraging for the day, not in the morning or midday when flowers are open and actively visited. Never spray open flowers directly with any insecticide, including organic ones — if treatment is necessary on a flowering plant, target foliage and avoid the blossoms themselves where possible.
Squash and cucumbers have separate male and female flowers on the same plant, and poor fruit set — flowers that appear and then shrivel without producing fruit — is often simply a pollination failure rather than a disease or nutrient problem. Male flowers (on a plain stem) typically appear before female flowers (with a small swollen ovary, a miniature fruit, behind the petals), so a lack of fruit set in the first week or two of flowering is often just a timing issue that resolves once both flower types are present together. If pollinator activity seems low, hand-pollination with a small paintbrush — transferring pollen from a male flower's center to a female flower's center — is a reliable backup.
Provide a variety of bloom, not just your vegetables. A vegetable garden surrounded by flowering herbs, native perennials, or even a strip of clover keeps pollinator populations present and active in the area, rather than relying on wild bees to find your squash blossoms as their only nearby food source. Plants already in the garden that you might otherwise pull — bolting cilantro or arugula — are excellent bee forage if left a few extra weeks rather than removed the moment they flower.
Provide water. A shallow dish with stones or marbles breaking the surface (so insects have something to land on without drowning) gives pollinators a water source during hot weather and is a simple addition that costs nothing.

If you set up drip or soaker hose irrigation in April, monitor its effectiveness:
- Check moisture at plant roots (3–4 inches deep) every few days
- Adjust emitters if some areas are dry while others are waterlogged
