Digging and storing tender bulbs

Dahlias, gladiolus, cannas, caladiums, and similar tender bulbs and tubers won't survive winter in the ground anywhere colder than about zone 7–8, and digging them for indoor storage before hard frost turns them into a multi-year investment instead of a one-season planting.

Timing: Wait until the first light frost blackens the foliage — this signals the plant has finished moving stored energy down into the bulb or tuber for the season — then dig within a few days, before a harder freeze can damage the below-ground structure itself.

Digging technique: Work a garden fork in a wide circle around the plant, well outside the expected spread of the root mass, and lift from underneath rather than pulling from the top, which tends to snap the stem away from the tuber. Shake or brush off loose soil but don't wash the tubers — added moisture at this stage increases rot risk in storage.

Curing before storage: Let dug bulbs and tubers air-dry in a single layer somewhere cool, dark, and ventilated for several days to a couple of weeks, similar in principle to the vegetable curing described in the September guide — this lets cut and broken surfaces from digging callus over before they're packed away.

Storage medium and conditions: Pack cured tubers in slightly damp (not wet) peat moss, vermiculite, or wood shavings in a box or paper bag, and store at 40–50°F in a dark space — a basement, unheated closet, or garage that doesn't freeze. Check every few weeks through winter: shriveling means the storage medium or air is too dry (mist lightly), while any soft, rotting tubers should be removed immediately so rot doesn't spread to healthy ones nearby.

Dahlias specifically benefit from dividing the clump at digging time or in early spring before replanting — each division needs at least one eye (growing point, usually found near where the old stem met the tuber) to sprout, and a tuber without an eye, however large and healthy-looking, won't grow.

Garlic planted in October needs continued mulch through winter:

Extension research consistently shows a measurable pH shift can take 3–6 months to fully develop after application, which is exactly why fall is recommended over a spring application made right before planting — a fall application has the entire winter to react before spring crops need the corrected pH. Applying lime in spring and expecting an immediate fix is a common and avoidable timing mistake.
