September is often the most pleasant month in the garden. Fall crops planted in June-July are now maturing in ideal conditions. Summer crops are fading. The weather is moderate, pests are declining, and harvest quality peaks. Now is the time to monitor frost forecasts closely and plan season-end activities.

September tasks

Monitor weather closely; watch frost forecasts

Starting mid-September, frost risk begins to build toward the season-ending freeze:

  • Check 10-day forecasts daily for temperature patterns
  • Know your first-frost date (10% probability date is most reliable)
  • Watch for clear, calm nights in late September — these bring frost risk even when temperatures look borderline
  • Have frost protection ready (row covers, blankets, or plan for early harvest)

A single frost date in September is unusual; the real frost risk builds in October. But late September can bring occasional frost in some years.

Harvest fall crops at peak quality

September vegetables often taste better than spring/summer because of cool nights and moderate temperatures:

  • Lettuce and other greens: Harvest outer leaves or cut-and-come-again style; greens are tender and mild in cool weather
  • Brassicas (broccoli, cabbage, kale): Taste sweetest after a light frost (cold triggers starch → sugar conversion)

Why cold actually makes vegetables sweeter. This isn't a matter of taste perception shifting with the weather — it's real chemistry happening in the plant. As temperatures drop toward freezing, many cold-hardy plants convert stored starch into simple sugars, which act as a natural antifreeze by lowering the freezing point of the fluid inside their cells (a mechanism similar to how salt lowers water's freezing point). The colder it gets, within the plant's tolerance, the more sugar accumulates. This is measurable, not subjective — sweetness in kale and carrots left in the ground through a few frosts is a genuinely higher sugar content, not just a perceptual effect of eating something in cold weather.

Continue supporting fall crops

Fall crops are at peak growth phase:

  • Water consistently — September typically has moderate rainfall, but droughts can still occur
  • Mulch maintains moisture — maintain 3–4 inch depth
  • Weed before weeds set seed — September is when many weeds make their final push
  • Watch for pests — late-season pests are less common but still present

Begin removing failing summer crops

Most warm-season crops are declining:

  • Remove severely diseased plants — tomatoes with late blight, peppers with leaf spot
  • Remove unproductive plants — if a tomato hasn't produced much, it won't finish well
  • Keep only vigorous, healthy plants — space them better, improve air circulation
  • Compost disease-free foliage and stems; discard diseased material

Prepare harvesting and preservation workflow

The harvest is about to accelerate:

  • Organize preservation methods: freezing, canning, drying, fresh storage

These crops planted in June-July should be near harvest now:

  • Broccoli: Harvest the central head when it's tight and green (before flowers open). Side shoots will follow.
  • Cabbage: Harvest when solid and firm; cut with a sharp knife leaving the stem, which will produce smaller heads
  • Kale: Harvest outer leaves first, working inward; plant keeps producing through hard freeze
  • Cauliflower: Harvest when curds are tight and white (before they become bumpy); cut with stem

Light frosts improve flavor for all brassicas.

Root crops (carrots, beets, turnips) approaching maturity

Root crops planted in July-August are reaching harvest size:

  • Carrots: Pull when they reach desired thickness (1–2 inches typical); full-size carrots store better than immature ones
  • Beets: Harvest when 1.5–3 inches in diameter; large beets become woody
  • Turnips: Pick when 2–3 inches in diameter; larger roots become pithy
  • Radishes: Harvest when crisp; larger radishes become hollow and bitter

Most root crops store better than leafy greens and can be harvested as needed through October/November.

Greens (lettuce, spinach, arugula) at peak

Early August plantings are now harvestable:

  • Harvest outer leaves and let the plant continue; this extends harvest period
  • Or harvest entire plants when mature; these take 30–45 days from seeding
  • Succession plantings begun in mid-August should be reaching maturity; later plantings will mature into October
  • Frost actually improves greens — light frosts add sweetness

Perennial and semi-perennial crops

Some crops planted earlier continue producing:

  • Herbs (thyme, rosemary, oregano, sage): Continue harvesting before winter dormancy

Curing and storing winter crops

Several crops need a deliberate curing period before long-term storage — skipping it is a common reason stored vegetables rot within weeks instead of lasting all winter.

Winter squash and pumpkins need 7–14 days curing at 80–85°F with good airflow (a warm porch, a sunny room, or outdoors in dry weather) before storage. Curing hardens and thickens the skin and heals over any small nicks from harvest, both of which dramatically slow moisture loss and decay in storage. After curing, properly cured winter squash keeps for 2–6 months (varying by type — acorn squash stores shortest, hubbard and butternut longest) in a cool (50–55°F), moderately dry space. Always cut squash from the vine with a few inches of stem attached rather than snapping it off; a squash without its stem rots from that point much faster.

Onions and garlic cure by drying whole (tops still attached) in a single layer with good airflow, out of direct sun, for 2–4 weeks until the outer skins are papery and the necks are fully dry and tight. Only after curing should tops be trimmed (leaving an inch or so) and the bulbs moved to long-term storage in a cool, dry, dark location with air circulation — mesh bags or braided strings both work. An onion with a soft, uncured neck stored too soon will rot from the neck down.

Potatoes cure for 1–2 weeks in a cool (55–60°F), dark, humid location before long-term storage; this heals over skin damage from digging in the same way squash curing heals nicks. Cured potatoes then keep for months in a dark, cool (38–45°F) location — light causes greening and bitterness (a mild toxin, solanine, accumulates with green color, so discard greened portions), so storage must be fully dark, not just dim.

Sweet potatoes need warmer, more humid curing than regular potatoes: about 10 days at 80–85°F and high humidity, which converts starches to sugars and heals skin for storage — skipping this step results in noticeably blander sweet potatoes with a much shorter storage life. After curing, store at 55–60°F; unlike regular potatoes, sweet potatoes should never be refrigerated, which damages their texture and flavor.

Frost monitoring

When first frost is forecast

When a 28°F or below temperature is forecast:

  • Harvest anything tender — basil, peppers, any heat-lovers
  • Cover crops if desired — row covers provide 2–8°F of frost protection
  • Accept harvest end — some crops will be killed; it's normal

Check wind, not just the temperature number. A clear, calm night allows heat to radiate away from plant surfaces even when the official air temperature reading stays a few degrees above freezing — a covered or sheltered plant can still frost under those conditions. A windy cold night, by contrast, often does less frost damage to exposed plants than a still one at the same temperature, because moving air prevents the sharp radiational cooling right at the leaf surface, though it also makes floating row cover far less effective (see the Seasonal Garden Planner's discussion of radiative versus advective freezes for the full mechanism). Check the forecast for wind alongside temperature before deciding whether a borderline night needs covering.

Which crops survive light frost

  • Kale, collards, and other cold-hardy greens: Survive 20°F or lower; grow better after light frost
  • Root crops below ground: Protected from frost; harvest as needed
  • Brassicas: Survive 25°F or lower; flavor improves after frost

Which crops end at first frost

  • Basil, peppers, eggplant: Killed by 32°F; frost ends production
  • Beans, tender greens: Killed by first frost
  • Tomatoes: Die back; harvest all fruit before hard freeze

As summer crops finish and before they become diseased:

  • Pull spent plants completely — remove roots and all
  • Discard diseased material — don't compost late blight or other serious diseases
