October is the season's final active month in most climates. The first killing frost arrives, ending tender crops. Hardy fall crops are at their peak and in their final weeks before deep cold arrives. It's the month to plant garlic, establish cover crops, and begin the season-end shutdown.

October tasks

Respond to frost forecasts

By October, frost is frequent:

  • Watch forecasts closely — frosts may come several nights in a row or be isolated
  • Protect tender crops — basil, peppers, eggplant if you're trying to extend harvest
  • Protect established tender plants — young trees, tender perennials (cover with frost cloth or mulch heavily)
  • Accept crop end — after a hard freeze (28°F or below), warm-season crops are finished

Frost cloth or old blankets provide 2–8°F of protection. For a few tender plants, it's worth using. For a large garden, you can't protect everything.

Harvest before frost

Before a hard-freeze forecast:

  • Harvest all remaining tomatoes, even green ones (they'll ripen indoors)
  • Pick all peppers and eggplant
  • Harvest basil completely before frost (freeze or preserve)
  • Don't waste time — frost can come suddenly

Harvest hardy crops through late October

Hardy crops continue through late October and even into November:

  • Kale, collards, and other cold-hardy greens: Improve in flavor after frost; continue harvesting
  • Root crops (carrots, beets, turnips): Leave in ground and harvest as needed; mulch heavily to prevent ground from freezing
  • Radishes: Winter radishes are hardy; harvest through fall
  • Spinach: Survives multiple frosts; quality improves

These crops provide food well into November or December in many climates.

Plant garlic in mid-to-late October

Garlic planting window is narrow and critical:

  • Plant by mid-to-late October in most climates (zone 7–8: October 10–31; zone 6: September 20–October 15; zone 5 and colder: September 1–30)
  • Break bulbs into cloves (largest cloves produce largest bulbs) a few days before planting
  • Plant cloves 2 inches deep, 4–6 inches apart, with pointed end up
  • Mulch heavily (4–6 inches) after planting to prevent frost heave
  • Garlic will sprout briefly in fall, then go dormant over winter; this is normal

Garlic planted in October will be ready to harvest in late May or June.

Plant and establish cover crops

Cover crops protect and build soil over winter:

  • Plant by late October in most climates (frost will slow germination but seeds will overwinter)
  • Common options: winter rye, hairy vetch, clover, oats, winter peas
  • Seeding rate and depth: Follow seed packet instructions
  • No fertilizer needed if planting a legume (nitrogen-fixer)

Cover crops will germinate in fall, overwinter, and grow vigorously in spring before tilling or cutting.

Remove and compost finished beds

Beds that are done for the season:

  • Drain irrigation systems before hard freeze (draining prevents burst pipes)
  • Clean and sharpen spades and hoes
  • Store equipment in a protected place
  • Drain and store hoses

Protect perennials and tender plants

Hardy perennials and borderline-hardy trees need preparation:

  • Mulch heavily (4–6 inches) around the base, leaving 2 inches clear around the stem
  • Cut back dead foliage after the first hard freeze (some gardeners wait until spring)
  • Don't prune — pruning stimulates tender new growth that frost will kill
  • Protect tender perennials grown as annuals (mandevilla, tropical herbs) by bringing inside or covering heavily

Row covers and frost cloth

Row covers provide 2–8°F of frost protection depending on weight:

  • Lightweight (1–1.5 oz): 2–4°F protection; allows light transmission
  • Heavyweight (5 oz+): 4–8°F protection; blocks more light
  • Application: Drape loosely over plants or frame, allowing room for growth
  • Removal: Remove during day if temperature exceeds 60°F to avoid overheating

Mulching for protection

Heavy mulch insulates the soil and roots:

  • Apply 4–6 inches around plants (but leave 2–3 inches clear around stems to prevent rot)
  • Mulch root crops heavily so ground doesn't freeze
  • Mulch acts as insulation slowing temperature change

Water as frost protection

Watering the day before frost helps (paradoxically):

  • Moist soil holds heat better than dry soil and warms slower (so it has more heat to release)
  • Not a substitute for other protection, but helps

Accepting crop end

Most home gardeners simply harvest as much as possible and accept when frost ends the season. This is reasonable and honest; frost-protection for large areas is labor-intensive.

Final harvest

Green tomatoes indoors

Harvest all tomatoes before hard freeze, even if green:

  • Place on a windowsill in a warm room — they'll ripen
  • Or place in a paper bag with an apple or ripe banana (produces ethylene gas, speeds ripening)
  • Ripening takes 1–3 weeks depending on how green they were

Herbs for preservation

Harvest heavily before frost kills tender herbs:

  • Basil: Freeze in oil, make pesto, or dry
  • Cilantro: Freeze chopped or let bolt for seed
  • Parsley: Freeze or dry
  • Tender perennials: Bring indoors or preserve by freezing

Root crops for storage

Harvest and store:

Planting garlic in detail

Garlic basics

  • Planted: Fall (October most regions)
  • Dormant: Over winter
  • Growth: Spring and early summer
  • Harvest: Late May to June (after top-falls over)
  • Two types: Hardneck (stores shorter, has better flavor) and softneck (stores longer)

Choosing between hardneck and softneck matters more in cold climates. Hardneck garlic requires a genuine cold period (vernalization) to form distinct cloves properly, produces a flowering stalk (scape) in early summer that's worth harvesting as a vegetable in its own right, generally has more complex flavor, but stores only 4–6 months. Softneck garlic (the braidable type sold in most grocery stores) tolerates milder winters better, doesn't produce a scape, and stores 8–12 months or longer — the type sold in supermarkets is almost always softneck for exactly this storage-life reason. In genuinely cold winter climates (zone 6 and colder), hardneck varieties are generally more reliable and are what most local garlic growers plant; in milder climates, softneck performs well and offers the storage advantage. Growing both, if space allows, hedges against either's weakness.

Don't plant grocery-store garlic. Most grocery store garlic is treated with a sprout inhibitor and may carry diseases not adapted to resist in your climate; it also often isn't labeled by variety, so you can't select for the traits (storage life, flavor, cold-hardiness) that matter for your situation. Seed garlic from a nursery or seed company, or a clove saved from your own or a neighbor's untreated crop, performs far more reliably.

Site and soil

  • Well-draining: Garlic rots if waterlogged
  • Full sun: At least 6 hours direct sun
  • Fertile soil: Amend with compost or balanced fertilizer before planting
  • pH 6.0–7.5: Acidic soil reduces yield

Planting spring-flowering bulbs

Alongside garlic, October is the standard planting window for tulips, daffodils, crocus, hyacinths, and other spring-flowering bulbs — they share the same requirement for a cold winter period to trigger proper spring bloom, so the timing logic is the same as garlic's.

Plant after soil has cooled but before it freezes solid, typically when nighttime temperatures are consistently in the 40s°F — planting too early in still-warm soil risks premature sprouting or rot; waiting until the ground is workable but cold is the safer target. In practice this is anywhere from early October in cold climates to as late as December in mild ones.

Planting depth follows a simple rule of thumb: roughly three times the bulb's height, measured from the base of the bulb, with the pointed end up. A typical daffodil or tulip bulb goes 6–8 inches deep; small bulbs like crocus need only 3–4 inches. Planting too shallow leaves bulbs vulnerable to frost heave and squirrel disturbance; too deep delays or weakens emergence.

Daffodils are the reliable, low-maintenance choice — deer and rodents generally avoid them (they contain a mild toxin), and established plantings return and multiply for many years with no replanting. Tulips are more vulnerable to being dug up and eaten by squirrels and voles, and many modern hybrid tulips decline in vigor after the first year or two, effectively performing as an annual in practice even though they're a true perennial bulb — planting them deeper than the standard depth and adding a layer of hardware cloth just below the soil surface both help against rodents.

Fertilize at planting, not in spring. Working a bulb fertilizer or bone meal into the bottom of the planting hole gives the developing root system access to phosphorus right when it's forming over winter; fertilizer applied after growth is already underway in spring does much less for that season's bloom.

Establishing cover crops

Benefits of cover crops

  • Prevent erosion: Protect bare soil from winter rains
  • Suppress weeds: Dense cover crop growth outcompetes weeds
  • Fix nitrogen (if legume): Clover and vetch add nitrogen to soil
  • Build soil: Organic matter from crop residue improves soil structure
  • Suppress disease: Certain cover crops inhibit fungal diseases

Planting timing for fall cover crops

  • Plant by late October in most climates (mid-September in zone 5 and colder, November in zone 9)
  • Seeds will germinate in fall, grow slowly, then resume vigorously in spring

  • Wait 2–3 weeks before planting (cover crop decomposition temporarily ties up nitrogen)

Why the nitrogen tie-up happens. Soil microbes decomposing fresh plant material need nitrogen themselves to build their own cell structures, and they'll draw it from the surrounding soil if the residue they're breaking down doesn't supply enough on its own — a temporary competition with your spring crops for the same nitrogen. This effect is strongest with high-carbon residue like mature winter rye (a wide carbon-to-nitrogen ratio) and much weaker with a nitrogen-rich legume like hairy vetch, which is one more reason a rye-vetch mix (grass plus legume together) is a common cover crop combination — the vetch's nitrogen partly offsets the rye's tie-up effect as both break down together.

Season-end cleanup

What to compost vs. discard

Compost (disease-free):

  • Healthy plant foliage and stems
  • Fallen leaves (not covered with disease)
  • Weeds that haven't set seed

Discard (not composted):

  • Plants affected by late blight, fusarium, verticillium, or other serious diseases
  • Diseased leaves and stems
  • Weeds with mature seed

Why this distinction matters mechanically. A home compost pile rarely sustains the temperature (typically needing to hold 131°F+ throughout for an extended period) required to reliably kill fungal spores, bacterial pathogens, and weed seeds — most backyard piles run cooler and less consistently hot than that. Composting diseased material doesn't destroy the pathogen in a home setting the way it might in a large, actively managed commercial operation; it just relocates it, ready to reinfect next year's plants when you spread that compost. This is also the mechanistic reason behind crop rotation: many soil-borne pathogens (fusarium, verticillium, clubroot) persist in soil for years directly, with no plant host needed, so removing infected plant material breaks only part of the cycle — moving the next year's susceptible crop to different ground breaks the rest.

Final soil amendments

Before covering beds for winter:

  • Add compost: 1–2 inches worked in improves soil
  • Add fertilizer: Slow-release 10-10-10 or similar if not using cover crop
  • Add lime: If soil is acidic and you grow brassicas (which prefer pH 6.5+)
  • Add minerals: Rock phosphate or other if testing shows deficiencies

Closing down the season

  • Clear beds: Remove all plant material
  • Plant cover crop or mulch heavily
  • Store irrigation: Drain and disconnect
  • Clean tools: Drain fuel from power equipment
  • Drain and store hoses before hard freeze
