January is prime planning season. The holidays are past, the garden is quiet, and this is the time to take stock of last year, map out the year ahead, and order seed before your favorite varieties sell out.
January tasks
Review and reflect on last year
Walk the garden with a notebook and record what worked and what didn't. Use the questions from the Seasonal Garden Planner to focus your reflection:
- Which cultivars gave good yields and flavor? Which ones disappointing?
- What pests showed up and when?
- Where did disease pressure hit?
- Which beds held moisture well? Which dried out?
- Were there surprises with timing — crops that matured faster or slower than expected?
Go deeper than a one-line verdict. For each major crop, note the specific failure mode rather than a vague "didn't do well" — bolted, cracked, poor fruit set, foliage disease, insect damage, or simply out-competed by weeds. "Tomato X had blossom-end rot on the first flush, then recovered once I mulched" is a decision you can act on next July. "Tomatoes were okay" is not.
If you photographed the garden through the season (even just phone snapshots), scroll back through them now. Photos catch things memory drops — the week a bed was completely shaded by a neighbor's tree leafing out, or how crowded a planting actually was at its peak. Cross-reference the dates against your notes.
These notes become your decision-making record for this year. Keep them somewhere you'll actually reopen in June — a paper garden journal, a spreadsheet, or notes in your phone. The specific format matters less than the habit of writing while memory is still accurate rather than reconstructing it from nothing next January.
Order seed early
Seed catalogs start shipping in early January. Popular varieties of heirloom tomatoes, pepper cultivars, and newly released seeds sell out by February in many years. Browse your favorites and place orders:
- First choice goes to seeds you know performed well
- Try one or two new varieties per season rather than overhauling everything
- Check days to maturity against your season length (check your local freeze dates if you haven't already)
- Read the disease resistance codes on tomato and pepper varieties and match them to pressure you saw last year
Don't overbuy. A packet of 50 seeds of a variety you'll sow twice a year still lasts two years. Three packets of untouched seed packets from five years ago is not useful.
Reading disease resistance codes. Tomato and pepper catalogs list letter codes after variety names — V (Verticillium wilt), F or FF (Fusarium wilt races 1 and 2), N (nematodes), T (tobacco mosaic virus), A (Alternaria), St (Stemphylium gray leaf spot). A tag reading "VFN" resists verticillium, fusarium, and nematodes. These codes only matter if you actually have the pathogen in your soil — a fusarium-resistant variety offers no benefit if your soil has never hosted fusarium, but it costs nothing to have the resistance in reserve. If a specific disease devastated a crop last year, prioritize resistant varieties for that crop family this year.
Testing old seed for viability. Before ordering a replacement for something you already have, test it: count out 10 seeds, roll them into a damp paper towel, seal in a plastic bag, and keep somewhere around 70°F. Check daily starting at the days-to-germination listed on the packet. If 8 or more sprout, the packet is fine as-is. If 5–7 sprout, sow it more thickly than usual. Below 5, replace it — germination rate only declines from there as the season goes on, and thin, patchy stands cost you more time than a fresh packet.
Storage while you wait for spring. Seed keeps best cool and dry — a sealed container in the refrigerator (not freezer, which risks condensation damage on removal) outperforms a shelf in a warm room by years of shelf life. Silica gel packets or a spoonful of powdered milk wrapped in cloth inside the container absorb ambient moisture.
Prune dormant trees and shrubs
Dormant pruning (late fall through very early spring) happens when trees are leafless and sap isn't flowing, so the plant isn't stressed and healing is fastest. See Dormant pruning in detail below for cut types, tools, and timing by plant group.
Drain and store irrigation
Before freezing weather (if you haven't already), drain irrigation lines, shut off the main valve, and store hoses. Water left in lines can freeze and crack them. Drain soaker hoses by hanging them or laying them on high ground to drain completely.
Inspect and repair structures
Check trellises, beds, fencing, and cold frames for winter damage. Repair or replace weakened wood now, before spring. Inspect raised beds for rot and replace boards if needed.
Dormant pruning in detail
For fruit trees: prune to an open center (vase shape) or central leader (Christmas-tree shape) depending on the species — your local extension service publishes the standard form for each species in your region. Stone fruits (peaches, plums, cherries) are typically trained to open center; pome fruits (apples, pears) more often to central leader or modified leader. The goal either way is a well-lit canopy where air moves through, reducing fungal disease and improving fruit color and sugar. Thin crowded branches and remove any crossing or inward-growing wood, watersprouts (vigorous vertical shoots), and suckers from the rootstock.
Two cut types, two purposes. A heading cut shortens a branch back to a bud, and it stimulates a flush of new growth from buds just below the cut — use it sparingly, mainly to encourage branching in a young tree's scaffold. A thinning cut removes a branch entirely back to its point of origin (the trunk or a larger branch), and it opens the canopy without triggering a burst of regrowth. Most of the cuts in a mature tree's annual pruning should be thinning cuts; heading cuts on an established tree tend to produce a thicket of upright watersprouts exactly where you didn't want more growth.
The one-third rule. Removing more than about a third of a tree's canopy in one season shocks it and can trigger excessive vegetative regrowth at the expense of fruit the following year or two. If a tree has been neglected for years and needs heavy correction, spread the work across two or three winters rather than doing it all at once.
For ornamental shrubs: prune to shape and remove dead wood, but avoid heavy pruning of spring bloomers — forsythia, lilac, azalea, and other shrubs that flower before or with new spring leaves set their flower buds in late summer of the previous year, and pruning in January removes next spring's flowers. If a spring bloomer needs shaping, do it within a few weeks right after it finishes flowering instead. Summer bloomers (many hydrangeas, butterfly bush, crape myrtle) set buds on new wood and can take heavier dormant pruning now without sacrificing bloom.
Tools and wound care. Use bypass pruners (a scissor action) rather than anvil pruners for live wood — anvil types crush stem tissue against a flat plate, which slows healing. Match the tool to the cut: hand pruners for anything under about 3/4 inch, loppers for up to 1.5–2 inches, and a pruning saw beyond that; forcing an oversized cut through hand pruners tears rather than cuts. Modern practice does not recommend pruning paint or wound sealant on cuts — research going back decades shows sealed wounds trap moisture and can slow the tree's own natural compartmentalization response rather than help it. A clean cut left open to the air heals better on its own.
Sanitize between plants when disease is present. If you're pruning out fire blight, canker, or other infectious wood, wipe blades with rubbing alcohol or a 10% bleach solution between cuts, not just between trees. Skipping this step is a common way an orchard's disease spreads on the pruner's own blade.
The general rule: pruning stimulates growth at the cut site. Prune in January and early February to encourage vigor heading into the growing season; prune in mid-to-late summer instead if the goal is to slow a plant's growth as you approach your first-freeze date, since summer cuts don't get the same flush of regrowth response that dormant cuts do.
What to plant in January
In warm climates (USDA zones 8 and warmer): January is a prime planting month. Soil is moist, frost risk is manageable, and cool-season crops thrive. Plant onions from sets or transplants; spinach, lettuce, arugula, and other leafy greens; peas and fava beans; broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower transplants (if not already in the ground from November or December); and carrots, beets, and other root crops.
In moderate climates (zones 6–7): Plant only after a soil temperature check. If soil is at least 40–50°F, you can sow cool-season crops. If soil is still frozen or near freezing, wait. Onion sets and transplants can go in at the upper end of this range. Fava beans can tolerate cold soil but prefer 50°F or warmer.
In cold climates (zones 5 and colder): January is not a planting month unless you are using season extension (low tunnels, cold frames, or other protection). If you are, spinach, lettuce, and leafy greens can be sown under cover even in cold climates. Otherwise, wait until March or April.
Cool-season crops suitable for January planting
- Leafy greens: lettuce, spinach, arugula, mustard, kale (as transplants)
- Brassicas: broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower (as transplants)
- Alliums: onion sets or transplants
- Root crops: carrots, beets, parsnips, radishes
- Legumes: peas (sugar snap, snow, shelling), fava beans
- Others: chard, endive, radicchio
Key timing: Cool-season crops grow slowly in January. Lettuce seeded in January may not be harvestable until March. Plan accordingly and don't expect the speed you get in spring. Growth rate under short winter daylength is driven more by day length and light intensity than by temperature alone — even a mild January day has 4–6 fewer hours of daylight than a March day at the same latitude, so photosynthesis simply has less time to happen. This is sometimes called the "Persephone period" by market growers: the stretch of the year when daylight drops below about 10 hours and most plant growth nearly stops regardless of temperature. Crops sown into that window mostly just sit, cold-hardy but not growing, until day length increases again — so treat a January sowing as "in place and ready to grow once light returns" rather than expecting steady weekly progress.
Season extension structures for January growing
If you're gardening in a moderate or cold climate and want January harvests, the structure you choose determines what's possible:
- Cold frames: A bottomless box with a clear lid (glass or rigid plastic) set directly over a bed. Cheap to build from scrap lumber and an old window. Provides roughly 5–10°F of protection and traps solar heat during the day; vent on sunny days above about 40°F outside temperature or the interior can overheat even in winter.
- Low tunnels: Wire or PVC hoops covered with row cover fabric or plastic sheeting over a bed. Faster to install over a long row than individual cold frames, and easy to remove for harvest access.
- Unheated high tunnels/hoop houses: A walk-in structure over multiple beds. The biggest investment of the three, but the payoff is being able to work standing up and grow a meaningful quantity of greens through winter in many climates.
- Double-covering: Row cover fabric directly on the plants, inside a cold frame or tunnel, stacks the protection of both layers and is the standard technique for pushing hardy greens through the coldest nights.
Bed preparation
Add compost and mulch
If beds are empty and not frozen, add a 2–3 inch layer of finished compost. January rain will incorporate it. Mulch beds with leafy crops to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and regulate soil temperature. Compost applied now has months to integrate before spring planting, which matters more for compost that isn't fully finished — a partially finished batch can tie up nitrogen temporarily as soil microbes work on it, and that competition is better resolved before seeds go in than after.
Prepare beds for spring under protection
If using a cold frame or low tunnel for January planting, prepare beds thoroughly:
- Amend with compost and any slow-release fertilizer your crops might need
- Ensure good drainage so water doesn't pool in the bed
- Set up the cover or frame before planting
Check and repair raised beds
If you use raised beds, January is a good time to check for rot, repair corners, or rebuild if needed. Empty and refresh the soil before spring if beds have been in place for many years. Untreated pine or fir framing typically lasts 4–7 years before corners need attention; cedar and redwood last longer but cost more up front. If a board is soft enough to push a thumbnail into more than a fraction of an inch, replace it rather than patch it — rot spreads through end grain quickly once it starts.
Consider a soil test now
Fall or winter is the ideal window for soil testing, because amendments like lime (which raises pH) or sulfur (which lowers it) act slowly — months, not weeks — and applying them now gives them time to take effect before spring planting. Pull a sample from the top 6 inches of several spots in a bed, mix them together, and send a cup or two to your state extension's soil testing lab. Results typically take 1–3 weeks and guide exactly how much of each amendment to add, which is far more precise than guessing.
Season planning
Set your local anchors
If you haven't already, look up and write down:
- Your 50% and 10% spring frost dates (from your local National Weather Service forecast office or NOAA)
- Your typical first-fall-freeze date
- Your USDA hardiness zone
- Your typical frost-free growing season length (days between last spring frost and first fall frost)
Sketch your garden layout for spring
Using your notes on what worked and what didn't:
- Decide what you'll grow
- Sketch where each crop will go (this is crop rotation at work — don't plant the same family in the same bed year after year)
- Account for shade changes — where does shade reach each bed as spring and summer progress?
- Note where water pools during heavy rain and plan drainage or water-loving crops there
Calculate transplant start dates
Work backward from your target transplant date (usually 1–2 weeks after your last spring frost date). Most warm-season crops need 4–8 weeks indoors before transplanting:
- Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant: 6–8 weeks
- Basil, marigolds, zinnias: 4–6 weeks
- Squash, cucumbers, melons: 3–4 weeks (start late to avoid root-bound transplants)
Start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before your planned transplant date.
Review irrigation and watering plans
Look at where you had moisture problems last year:
- Did any beds dry out completely during drought?
- Did others stay waterlogged after heavy rain?
- Do you need to add soaker hoses, drip lines, or mulch?
January is a good time to install new drip irrigation or rebuild systems before the busy spring planting season.
Budget and prioritize infrastructure
Before spring spending starts in earnest, decide what actually needs money this year versus what can wait:
- Repairs first: structural failures (a collapsing bed, a leaking main line) take priority over upgrades
- High-leverage additions: a soil test and its recommended amendments usually returns more yield per dollar than a new tool
- Nice-to-haves last: decorative elements, expansion into new beds, and specialty equipment can wait a season if the budget is tight
Write the list down and rank it. A ranked list survives a tight February budget better than a mental list of "things I should probably do."
Indoor plant care
While the outdoor garden sleeps, houseplants are dealing with the year's lowest light and driest air — a different set of problems from summer, and January is when most indoor plant losses happen if you don't adjust care.
Cut back on watering. Most houseplants grow far more slowly in winter's low light, which means they use far less water. Continuing a summer watering schedule into January is the single most common cause of winter houseplant death, via root rot rather than cold. Check the soil with a finger 2 inches down before watering rather than watering on a fixed schedule; for most houseplants, letting the top half of the pot dry between waterings is safer in winter than keeping it consistently moist.
Watch humidity, not just water. Heated indoor air in winter often sits below 30% relative humidity, well under the 40–60% many tropical houseplants prefer. Brown, crispy leaf tips are the classic symptom. Grouping plants together, using a pebble tray with water beneath (not touching) the pot base, or running a humidifier nearby all help more than increasing soil watering, which just adds root-rot risk without fixing the actual humidity problem.
Stop fertilizing, or cut it back hard. With growth slowed by low light, most houseplants need little to no fertilizer from roughly November through February. Resume a dilute feeding schedule as new growth resumes and days lengthen, typically starting in March.
Keep plants away from cold glass and heat sources alike. Leaves touching a cold windowpane can suffer chill damage even when the room itself is comfortable; leaves too close to a heating vent dry out unevenly. A few inches of clearance from both solves most of it.
Rotate for even light. Winter sun angles low and plants lean hard toward the brightest window. A quarter-turn every week or two keeps growth even instead of one-sided.
