June marks the shift from spring growth to summer production. Plants are at or near mature size, flowers are setting fruit, and summer heat is building. The work is mainly maintenance: consistent watering, weeding, scouting for pests, and supporting a heavy crop.

June tasks

Water becomes the paramount concern

June often brings the shift to summer drought patterns in many climates. Mature plants with large fruit load use enormous amounts of water:

  • Check soil moisture every 1–2 days at 3–4 inches deep
  • Water early morning (before 8 AM) to avoid heat of day and allow foliage to dry
  • Water deeply — 1–2 inches per week (including rain) is typical; in heat or sandy soil, more may be needed
  • Mulch heavily — a 3–4 inch layer of mulch reduces water needs by up to 50%
  • Watch for wilt — mild wilt in afternoon is tolerable; severe wilt by morning means water is inadequate

Drip irrigation or soaker hoses are essential in June. Hand watering alone cannot keep a large garden adequately watered in summer heat.

Telling drought wilt from disease wilt. A plant wilting from lack of water perks back up within an hour or two of watering; a plant wilting from a vascular disease (fusarium or verticillium wilt, bacterial wilt) does not recover with water and often shows wilting on just one side of the plant or one branch at a time rather than uniformly. If a well-watered plant is still wilted the next morning, suspect disease rather than continuing to increase water, which can worsen a root-disease problem instead of helping it.

Stop pruning and fertilizing

Morning harvest (when plants are turgid and full of water) gives better quality than afternoon harvest.

Scout for summer pests and diseases

Heat stress and dense foliage invite certain pests:

  • Mites thrive in hot, dry weather; check leaf undersides
  • Whiteflies explode in June heat; inspect new growth
  • Powdery mildew can return despite earlier spraying; watch especially on squash and other cucurbits
  • Heat-stressed plants are more vulnerable to disease and pest damage

Scout weekly. Stressed plants deserve extra attention.

Plan succession plantings for fall

Fall crops are planted in late June and early July, which means planning now:

  • Calculate back from your first frost date (count back the days to maturity plus 2–3 weeks for autumn slowness)

Fall crops often produce better quality than spring (fewer pests, milder temperatures), making this planning worthwhile.

Managing summer heat

When plants wilt from heat

Some wilt in afternoon heat is normal — plants regulate temperature by releasing water. Severe wilt, especially in morning, means water is insufficient:

  • Increase watering frequency — twice daily may be needed in extreme heat
  • Mulch heavily to keep soil cool
  • Provide afternoon shade for very heat-sensitive crops (lettuce, spinach, basil) — shade cloth or tall nearby plants help
  • Focus on watering deeply — frequent light watering encourages shallow roots

Crop-specific heat considerations

  • Tomatoes: Maintain consistent moisture; irregular watering causes blossom-end rot and fruit cracking
  • Peppers: Thrive in heat but need consistent moisture for good fruit set
  • Cucumbers, squash: Need abundant water; wilt indicates water stress
  • Basil: Becomes stressed in extreme heat; shade in very hot climates

Heat-induced problems

  • Blossom-end rot: Black, sunken spots on tomato and pepper bottoms; caused by calcium deficiency during dry spells → maintain consistent moisture

  • Reduced pollination: Heat over 90°F can reduce pollen viability, especially on tomatoes and beans → mulch to keep soil cool, provide afternoon shade if possible

Why blossom-end rot is a water problem, not usually a soil problem. Calcium moves through a plant almost entirely via the transpiration stream — dissolved in water moving up from roots to leaves — rather than being actively transported by the plant. When soil moisture swings between too dry and too wet, that water flow becomes inconsistent, and the fast-growing fruit (which transpires less than leaves and so pulls calcium less strongly) ends up short even when the soil itself has adequate calcium. This is why blossom-end rot often appears on the first flush of fruit during an uneven early-summer watering pattern and then largely disappears once watering becomes consistent, without any calcium having been added — a soil test showing adequate calcium alongside active blossom-end rot is the tell that the fix is watering consistency, not a calcium amendment. Foliar calcium sprays marketed for blossom-end rot have limited evidence behind them for this reason; consistent soil moisture addresses the actual mechanism.

Supporting pollination

Creating conditions for good fruit set

  • Provide flowers for pollinators: Plant herbs (basil, cilantro, dill) to bloom; let some greens bolt for flowers
  • Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides that kill beneficial insects
  • Water in early morning so pollinators aren't seeking water from flowers
  • Provide nesting habitat: Leave dead wood for solitary bees and other insects

Supporting plants during flowering

  • Consistent watering during flowering and early fruit development
  • Light hand-pollinating if natural pollination seems inadequate (use a small brush to transfer pollen between flowers)
  • Remove early fruit if plants set too heavily (pick small fruit to strengthen larger ones)
  • Mulch keeps flowers and fruit clean and prevents mud splash

Caring for berries and fruit trees

June is peak activity month for perennial fruit crops, most of which need attention timed to this exact point in their cycle rather than to a fixed calendar date.

Renovate June-bearing strawberries right after harvest. Once the harvest window ends, mow or cut back the foliage to about 1 inch above the crowns, thin the bed to leave plants spaced 6–12 inches apart (strawberry beds thicken with runners over the season and become overcrowded), and side-dress with fertilizer. This renovation is what keeps a strawberry planting productive for 3–4 years instead of declining sharply after the first or second. Everbearing and day-neutral varieties, which fruit continuously rather than in one flush, aren't renovated this way — just keep them watered and harvested through summer.

Thin tree fruit if the tree has set heavily. Apples, peaches, and plums that set a very heavy fruit load benefit from thinning to one fruit every 4–6 inches along the branch, done while fruit is still small (typically within 4–6 weeks of bloom, which lands in June for many regions). Thinning produces larger, higher-quality remaining fruit, reduces limb breakage from overweight branches, and reduces the "biennial bearing" pattern where a tree produces a huge crop one year and almost nothing the next.

Blueberries need acidic soil and consistent moisture. If leaves are yellowing between the veins while the veins themselves stay green (a symptom called interveinal chlorosis), soil pH is likely too high for blueberries, which need a notably acidic 4.5–5.5 range unlike most other garden plants — a soil test confirms this before you add sulfur to correct it. Blueberries also have shallow root systems and are more drought-sensitive than their sturdy appearance suggests; consistent mulch and watering through fruit development directly affects berry size.

Prune out spent floricanes on brambles as they finish. Summer-bearing raspberries and blackberries fruit on second-year canes (floricanes); once a floricane finishes fruiting, cut it out at ground level to redirect the plant's energy into this year's new canes (primocanes), which will fruit next year. Leaving spent canes in place doesn't help the plant and increases disease pressure in the planting.

Harvest and care

Harvesting for quality

  • Tomatoes: Pick when shoulders start to color (not full red); they ripen off the vine and the plant focuses on more fruit
  • Peppers: Pick green or wait for red/yellow (red takes more energy); consistent harvesting encourages more production
  • Cucumbers: Pick when firm and 6–8 inches long; large, seedy cucumbers waste plant energy
  • Beans: Pick when pods snap cleanly; let any get large and production stops
  • Squash: Pick zucchini at 6–8 inches; large squash are tough and production stops
  • Herbs: Harvest tips of basil, oregano, thyme regularly; this encourages bushiness

Why tomatoes ripen off the vine at all. Ripening is driven by ethylene, a gas the fruit itself produces once it reaches a certain maturity stage (the "breaker" stage, when the blossom end first shows a hint of color change). A tomato picked at breaker stage and left at room temperature will complete ripening using its own stored ethylene and sugars, with little practical difference in final flavor from a vine-ripened fruit — this is why picking slightly early ahead of a storm or before frost isn't the quality compromise it's sometimes assumed to be. What does hurt flavor is refrigeration: temperatures below about 55°F damage the enzymes responsible for flavor compound development, which is why a refrigerated tomato tastes duller than one ripened on a counter.

Deadheading and pruning

  • Pinch off first-formed, misshapen fruit to strengthen later production
  • Remove diseased leaves immediately; don't let disease spread
  • Thin dense foliage on tomatoes (remove lower leaves) to improve air circulation and reduce disease

Timeline for fall crops

For a zone 7 garden with first frost around November 15:

  • Early July: Plant transplants of broccoli, cabbage, kale (8–10 weeks to maturity)
  • Late July: Direct-seed beets, carrots, turnips (50–70 days to maturity)
  • Early August: Direct-seed lettuce, spinach, arugula (30–45 days to maturity)
  • Late August: Plant final crops that will mature before frost (30-day greens will be ready by early October)

Choose crops based on:

  • Days to maturity: Count back from your first-frost date
